And the Germans came up the Indian Trail
Germantown started to get permanent settlers in the fall of 1839, when Pomeranians from Prussia were settling the Freistadt area in Mequon. The Pomeranians also settled the eastern edge of Germantown. Following them almost immediately were the other German settlers from the heart of Germany. Hessians came first to the towns that would later merge to form the city of Milwaukee. Then immigrants journeyed north along a trail used by the Indians for generations. The trail eventually became the Fond du Lac road, linking southeastern Wisconsin with the east central part of the state. One group of Hessians settled around what became the intersection of Fond du Lac Avenue and Donges Bay Road. They called this settlement Kuhburg, and founded St. John's Church.
